Some cases of acute periodontal (gum) disease that do not respond to more conventional treatment and self-care such as flossing may require a special kind of cleaning called scaling and root planing.

The procedure begins with administration of a local anesthetic to reduce any discomfort. Then, a small instrument called a "scaler," or an ultrasonic cleaner, is used to clean beneath your gum line to remove plaque and tartar.

After removing the tartar and calculus a laser is used to selectively remove diseased or infected tissues lining the pockets around your teeth.  At the same time the laser will kill the bacteria that is causing your gum disease and promote healing of your gums around your teeth.  The laser will help increase circulation and collagen formation at the bottom of your periodontal pockets and help revive or rejuvenate your attachment.  One of the biggest advantages of laser therapy is the fact that many times procedures can be performed with much less discomfort and postoperative pain than with conventional methods.  This is due to the lasers ability to seal off nerve endings and blood vessels and to be tissue specific during the treatment.  Additional measures maybe needed if the periodontal pockets persist after treatment.
